NSW Minister for Sport, the Hon Stephen Kamper, MP, made a welcome visit to the New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS) where he received an overview of the Institute’s operations by its chief executive officer, Kevin Thompson.

Mr Kamper, who, in his youth was a keen junior rugby league player before focussing on his business career, and who served as president of the famous Sydney Olympic Football Club, made it clear he appreciated the support NSWIS provides its scholarship holders.

“From what I saw there is a tremendous energy about NSWIS,” said Mr Kamper.

“I think the best testimony to the work that’s done at NSWIS by its coaches, the support staff, and – of course – the athletes, is the Institute’s impressive Roll of Honour.

“It contains Olympic Games, Paralympics and Commonwealth Games medallists, world champions, and a host of athletes from a variety of sports who have represented their state and nation with pride.

“I feel as though I can see how, and why, NSWIS has developed a reputation for ‘world’s best’ practice.”

Mr Thompson described his first meeting with the Minister as ‘meaningful’ and he looked forward to working closely with him.

“It was fantastic to learn of Mr Kamper’s passion for sport, and that he understands sport,” said Mr Thompson.

“We were proud to provide Mr Kamper with a tour of NSWIS, and for him to also meet the likes of Sam Fricker, who represented Australia in diving at the Tokyo Olympics, because Sam represents the quality of person and athlete in the NSWIS system.

“We look forward to working with Mr Kamper, and to also continuing to provide NSW athletes with the support they need to represent their state and Australia at major world sporting events.”

Mr Thompson and NSWIS scholarship athlete Sam Fricker welcomed the Sports Minister to the Institute by presenting him with a beautifully framed NSWIS hoodie signed by Olympic champion, Jessica Fox.
