Since the doors of NSWIS were officially opened in 1996, the Institute has grown to consistently be regarded amongst the world leaders in supporting and developing athletes to become world’s best.

The NSWIS has a proud history of success and over the last 20 years has produced a number of outstanding results, including:

An increase in funding from the NSW State Government of $2 million per annum ($8 million over four years), enables the NSWIS to support a broader range of sports and initiatives throughout the next Olympic and Paralympic cycle.

The total number of athletes that will now be supported by NSWIS’ world recognised coaching, performance support and innovative training environments will increase from 350 to approx. 500.

“Due to the increased Government funding the Institute is now able to increase our investment in high performance sport,” NSWIS CEO Charles Turner said.

Through collaborative partnerships, NSWIS will also be in a position to leverage joint investment from national and state sporting organisations to better achieve high performance sport outcomes in NSW.

“In collaboration with our sport partners the Institute will be heavily involved with a number of national high performance training centres and initiatives which will enable us to support internationally focused performance outcomes with sports including canoe slalom, cycling, diving, rowing, swimming, water polo and winter sports,” Turner added.
