The 2011 Australian Track Cycling Championships came to a close over the weekend with a host of NSWIS being crowned national champions.

Caleb Ewan, who won gold on the first day of competition, finished with a bang after winning the gold in the men’s under-19 25km points race, posting 44 points to take victory by 11 points over his nearest competitor. Ewan then went on to team with fellow NSWIS athlete Jackson Law to win another gold in the men’s under-19 30km madison.

Ewan and Law then joined NSWIS athletes Tirian McManus and Jack Beckinsale in winning silver in the men’s under-19 4000m team pursuit.

The accolades continued to flow for NSWIS athlete Timothy McMillan, who finished the championships with two gold, one silver and one bronze. McMillan won gold in the men’s under-19 keirin and under-19 sprint and silver in the men’s under-19 sprint final with fellow NSWIS athletes Mathew Ryan and Ben Young. Bronze came earlier in the meet in the men’s under-19 1000m time trial.

Other results included Scott Law winning the men’s 15km scratch race and Andrew Taylor won a silver medal in the men’s team sprint, where he was joined by NSWIS athletes Mitchell Bullen and Peter Lewis. Taylor also won bronze in the men’s keirin.

The NSWIS women won plenty of medals throughout the championship, most notably Kaarle McCulloch. McCulloch had won two gold medals earlier in the meet before going on to post a silver medal in the women’s sprint. NSWIS athlete Cassandra Kell finished with bronze.

Jayme Paris again showed why she is one of the premier female cyclists in the country, taking gold in the women’s para-C1 500m time trial.

Internationally, NSWIS cyclist Rochelle Gilmore has finished eighth in the 2011 Ladies’ Tour of Qatar. Gilmore won the first stage of the competition late last week but was unable to continue her form over the three stages, eventually finishing two minutes adrift of first place.
