Five NSWIS athletes have been recognised in the 2017 Australia Day honours list for their achievements in Rio at the Olympics and Paralympics.

Gold medal winning sailor Tom Burton, who won the men’s laser class at his first Games, has been made Member of the Order of Australia. This caps a fine year for Burton, having previously won Male Athlete of the Year at the 2016 NSWIS Awards.

Also receiving an OAM is 15-year-old swimmer Tiffany Thomas-Kane – winner of one gold and 2 bronze medals in the pool at the Rio Paralympics. She is joined on the list by James Turner, following his world record breaking win in the T36 800m.

Andrew Edmondsen has received an OAM as part of the gold medal winning wheelchair rugby team, and Jon Harris completes the group following his gold medal in the men’s 3-person kneelboat in Rio.

Congratulations to all!
