Australia’s newest Winter Olympic champion, Josie Baff, has been celebrated in her hometown of Jindabyne following a historic gold medal performance on the world stage.

The 23-year-old snowboard cross (SBX) athlete returned to Australia this week after a standout Northern Hemisphere season, highlighted by her breakthrough Olympic victory – cementing her place in Australian sporting history and becoming Jindabyne’s first-ever Winter Olympic gold medallist.

Baff’s path to gold was anything but straightforward. After qualifying 17th following an uncharacteristic error in seeding, she surged through a series of highly competitive heats, showcasing composure, tactical brilliance and determination. A dramatic photo-finish win in the quarterfinals set the tone, before a dominant semi-final performance secured her place in the final.

In the final race, Baff delivered under pressure – executing a near-flawless run to claim gold and fulfil a lifelong dream.

“It’s amazing – I really can’t believe it. I knew I could do it and deep down I had what it took. It’s a dream come true,” Baff said following her victory.

The achievement builds on an already impressive career, which includes Youth Olympic gold and consistent World Cup success, and reinforces Australia’s strength in snowboard cross on the global stage.

Baff was welcomed home by a proud Snowy Mountains community, with celebrations recognising not only her success but the support network behind it—including family, coaches, teammates, and the broader Australian winter sports system.

Her journey from local slopes in the Snowy Mountains to Olympic glory continues to inspire the next generation of athletes.

With future World Cup seasons ahead and eyes already on upcoming Olympic cycles, Baff’s story is far from finished.
