The snowboard cross lived up to its reputation as one of the wildest sports on the Olympic schedule, with all three NSWIS athletes competing missing out on the medals.

Following the postponement of the competition the previous day due to inclement weather, NSWIS athletes Cam Bolton (@cameron_bolton), Jarryd Hughes (@jarrydhughes) andAlex Pullin (@chumpypullin) were immediately thrust into the knockout stages, with all three progressing to the quarter-finals.

However it was in the quater-finals where the action became even more lively, with Pullin being eliminated first before Hughes was eliminated after taking a huge bump from another competitor. Bolton came through his race unscathed in the driving rain to progress to the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals Bolton was unfortunate to suffer the same fate as Hughes, taking a bump from another competitor and crashing out, suffering a suspected broken wrist in the process. Despite the injury, Bolton then competed in the small final and crashed again, before composing himself to cross the line and finish as the highest placed Australian in 11th overall.

Joining the snowboarders in action overnight were fellow NSWIS athletes Jana Pittman(@JanaPittman) and Lavinia Chrystal (@LaviniaChrystal).

Pittman, who joined Astrid Radjenovich in the women’s bobsleigh, became the first Australian female to compete at both the Summer and Winter Games as the duo placed 14th after two heats.

To round out results on day 11, alpine skier Chrystal took on the women’s giant slalom in her first appearance at the Games. Chrystal put together two solid runs to finish 40th overall.

The action continues on day 12 of the Sochi Games, with Pittman backing up for the final two runs of the bobsleigh, NSWIS athletes Anton Grimus (@antongrimus) and Scott Kneller (@scottkneller) taking on the men’s ski cross, and cross country skier Callum Watson (@callumwxc) competing in the team sprint classic.
