Athletes nominated for the ClubsNSW Personal Excellence award have been done so in recognition of their efforts to balance sporting success alongside academic achievement, career progression or personal development.

Whether it be studying at university, beginning a career to complement their sporting activity or undertaking further development to enhance their off-field capabilities, achieving on and off-field balance has become a focus for the following athletes:

  • Jo Brigden Jones (Canoe Sprint): After completing a postgraduate degree in Paramedics, Brigden-Jones chose to make working as a Paramedic as her priority for the year, but still managed to win two World Cup silver medals while claiming a top-eight finish at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships
  • Cameron Girdlestone (Rowing): Following Olympic silver success in 2016, Girdlestone opted not to be selected for national duties in 2017, prioritising teaching and coaching at SHORE in Sydney the SUBC athlete is also a ‘culture champion’ for Rowing Australia
  • Kaarle McCulloch (Cycling): While winning cycling world championship silver in 2017, McCulloch was also focusing on life after sport by studying a Bachelor of Education at Charles Sturt University, earning a distinction and high distinction from two subjects studied
  • Emily Washer (Swimming): The Carlile Swimming Club athlete received HSC marks in the top one per cent of students before being offered a place at the University of NSW to study a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Engineering double degree; while also claiming three top-five finishes at the 2017 Australian Swimming Championships
  • Krystle Yin (Winter Sports): While balancing her burgeoning freestyle moguls career, placing seventh at the Australia NZ Cup, 17-year old Yin also earned two credits and a high distinction from three subjects in a Bachelor of Veterinary Science
