NSWIS cyclist Kaarle McCulloch and her team mate Anna Meares have successfully defended their world title after taking gold in the women’s team sprint at the 2011 UCI Track Cycling Championships in the Netherlands.

The Australian duo qualified quickest for the final and then carried their form into the gold medal race to claim a third consecutive world title. McCulloch and Meares clocked a time of 33.237 seconds in the final, quicker than their qualifying time but still outside the world record they set in 2010.

The British pair of Victoria Pendleton and Jessica Varnish, who are likely to be the Australian’s arch rivals at the 2012 London Olympic Games, took silver and China secured bronze.
