NSWIS cyclist Caleb Ewan has finished his under-23 career in style by taking silver in the under-23 road race at the 2014 UCI Road Cycling World Championships in Spain.

Ewan was joined by fellow NSWIS athlete Sam Spokes in the race, leading a sprint finish to silver after Norway’s Sven Erik Bystrom broke away from the pack and won gold. Spokes finished 78th.

The silver was Australia’s fifth, and the Institute’s second medal at the championships after rising star Anna-Leeza Hull picked up bronze in the women’s junior individual time trial.

Ewan’s performance was his last as an under-23 rider, with the silver medallist transitioning to the professional Orica GreenEdge team from October.
