NSWIS cyclist Caleb Ewan has won the final stage of the Tour of Britain, sprinting to a decisive victory on the streets of London to claim the 16th professional win of his career.

The victory comes towards the end of a strong year for Ewan, who also won two stages at the Tour Down Under in January, a stage at the Herald Sun Tour before a handful of podium and top 10 finishes on stages at the Tour de Yorkshire and Giro d’Italia grand tour.

In the more recent past Ewan has also had podiums are the Tour of Poland, before winning the 21st Cyclassics one-day race in Hamburg, Germany.

Over the past week at the Tour of Britain the 22-year-old has again been among the best sprinters in the world. He finished second to German powerhouse Andre Greipel in stage one, before coming in fourth on stage five, which was won by Kiwi Jack Bauer.

The final stage of the tour saw the peloton ride 16 laps of a circuit in London, covering a total of 100km. An early breakaway was reeled in with around 12km to go, and from there the sprinters’ teams began to strategize how they would get their fast men to the front.

Biding his time, Ewan waited until the final run to the finish to launch his attack, making a move down the right hand side of the course to ride away before the pack could respond. By the time he hit the line there was no doubt that he was the victor.

Fellow Australian Rohan Dennis claimed second in the overall standings behind winner Steven Cummings of Great Britain.
