The Australian women’s wheelchair basketball team has begun the 2014 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships with mixed results over the weekend.

Featuring NSWIS athletes Kylie Gauci and Sarah Stewart, the Gliders suffered defeat to the USA on one of the biggest upsets of the opening day of competition. The Australians never led throughout the match before eventually falling 68-52.

However the team responded in the best possible way, thrashing minnows Peru 90-10 in the second round before securing a 59-47 win against France on the third day of competition to restore order to their campaign.

The Gliders next match comes against Mexico later tonight.
