NSWIS taekwondo athletes Carmen Marton and Safwan Khalil have both won medals over the weekend at the 2014 Oceania Championships and Australian Open in Sydney.

The Oceania Championships took place on Thursday and Friday last week, with Marton and Khalil each winning gold in their respective events. Marton enjoyed a 12-0 victory over her New Zealand competitor to win gold in the women’s -62kg division, while Khalil secured gold with a 13-1 win over his French-Polynesian challenger in the -58kg division to be crowned Oceania champion.

The Australian Open followed, with Marton falling at the final hurdle to take silver after a tough bout against Ashley Kraayeveld, while Khalil missed out on the medals following a semi-final loss to German Levent Tuncat.

The Australian team finished the Australian Open event in fourth place with one gold and one silver medal.
