The 2014 Commonwealth Games said goodbye in style this morning AEST with the closing ceremony in Glasgow, following a hectic final day of competition that saw nine NSWIS athletes win four gold medals.

The Australian men’s hockey team continued their domination in the Commonwealth Games, winning their fourth consecutive gold medal. Featuring NSWIS athletes Kieran Govers (
@Wizza27), Simon Orchard (@orch3) and Tristan White (@TristanOWhite), the Kookaburras swept aside rivals India 4-0 to claim gold.

There was further team joy for the Australian Netball Diamonds as the team put aside the heartbreak of the 2010 Commonwealth Games to crush New Zealand in the gold medal match. Featuring NSWIS athletes Kimberlee Green (
@Kimmygee8), Sharni Layton(@Sharni_Layton), Kim Ravaillion (@kimberley138) and Caitlin Thwaites(@CaitlinThwaites), the Diamonds easily accounted for New Zealand 58-40 to claim top honours.

Elsewhere in Glasgow, the squash events came to a close with David Palmer andCameron Pilley (
@campilley) triumphing in the men’s doubles thanks to a 2-1 win over England, with Palmer also winning gold in the mixed doubles after a 2-0 win over England. Pilley won bronze in the mixed doubles following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over New Zealand.

On behalf of the NSWIS Board and Chief Executive, the Institute would like to congratulate all of the NSWIS athletes who competed at the Games, including the 38 who contributed to 21 gold, six silver and 10 bronze medals.

The journey to the Gold Coast now begins for many of these athletes, with the next edition of the Commonwealth Games to take place in 2018 on home soil.
