The Australian men’s indoor hockey team started the 2011 FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup on the wrong foot overnight, losing to hosts Poland 1-3 in their first round encounter.

The Boomerangs were away to a flying start thanks to NSWIS athlete Kieran Govers, who slotted the opening goal of the match in a classy one-on-one move with the Polish goalkeeper.

However, the fast paced indoor hockey environment saw Poland hit back in the ninth minute and just before half-time to head into the break 2-1 up.

Poland then scored again midway through the second half to open up a 3-1 lead, which the Australian team could not peg back even with a two man advantage.
