Featuring four NSWIS athletes, the Australian women’s hockey team has finished with silver at the 2014 Champions Trophy following a tough penalty shootout loss against Argentina.

The teams finished level at 1-1 after full time, with Australia striking first just after half time before the hosts levelled on 39 minutes.

The match then moved to penalties, with Australian officials appealing Argentina’s first penalty after it appeared not to have crossed the line after hitting both goalposts.

The Hockeyroos then missed their opening penalty before Casey Eastham converted, but the Argentinian goalkeeper stood tall to deny the next two Australians to secure a 3-1 penalty victory for the home side.

The NSWIS athletes in the team were Eastham, Emily Smith and Mathilda Carmichael.

The silver marks the first medal the Hockeyroos have won at the Champions Trophy since 2009, when they were defeated 5-4 by Argentina.
