The Australian women’s hockey team, the Hockeyroos, have taken silver at the 2014 FIH Hockey World Cup following a tight 2-0 loss to the Netherlands in the final.

Featuring five NSWIS athletes, the Hockeyroos overcame the USA in a semi-final penalty shootout to secure a shot at gold against the reigning Olympic champions.

The Netherlands scored both their goals in the opening half, the first on 12 minutes before another in the 29th minute.

NSWIS athlete Emily Hurtz went closest to scoring for the Australians, with her shot cleared off the line to be denied a goal. Also in the team were fellow NSWIS athletes Casey Eastham, Kellie White, Kate Jenner and Emily Smith.

Despite the loss the Hockeyroos have improved significantly since their fifth place finish at the London Olympic Games and are expected to move to second on the world rankings.
