Agony and ecstasy has hit a pair of NSWIS men’s water polo scholarship holders just a week out from the Rio Olympics.

Water Polo Australia (WPA) today advised the Australian Olympic Committee that Nathan Power has been ruled out of the Rio Olympics after suffering a hand injury.

Power’s horrible misfortune will mean WPA will now nominate fellow NSWIS athlete and Olympic reserve Tyler Martin to the AOC. Rio will be Martin’s first Olympic Games.

Power has been preparing for Rio in a camp with the Australian men’s water polo team in Croatia when his Olympic dream was shattered.

The team were out for a meal after training in the busy Dubrovnik Old Town and afterwards on the way back to the hotel, Power fell and put his hand out to brace himself, resulting in a severe laceration.

While the injury will rule Power out of Rio he is expected to make a full recovery, but not in time for the Games.

Fortunately Martin has been in training camp with the team in Croatia and will fly with them to Rome for the final leg of the Rio preparations.
