The Australian men’s hockey team, the Kookaburras, have won the 2014 FIH Hockey World Cup after a 6-1 thrashing of hosts the Netherlands.

After cruising through the semi-finals with a 5-1 win over Argentina, the Kookaburras, featuring NSWIS athletes Kieran Govers and Simon Orchard, fell behind after only 14 minutes in the title decider, the first time they had fallen behind all tournament.

However the team trailed for only six minutes before they levelled the score at 1-1, before a Govers strike on 24 minutes saw the Australians go ahead 2-1, the margin they eventually carried into the half-time break.

Two minutes after the break the Kookaburras went up 3-1 and never looked back, scoring again in the 47th, 53rd and 64th minute to register a 6-1 win en route to glory in what was Orchard’s 150th appearance for the national side.

The win is Australia’s third World Cup triumph, having previously won in 2010 and 1986.

The Kookaburras now turn their focus to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where they will look to win their fifth consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal.
