The Australian men’s hockey team, featuring five NSWIS athletes, has won bronze at the 2014 Champions Trophy after a 2-1 victory over India.

Having lost to Olympic champions Germany in the semi-final, the Kookaburras faced the hosts in the bronze medal, and found themselves up 1-0 after just 18 minutes thanks to Eddie Ockenden’s opener.

India levelled the match on 42 minutes, before the Australians scored the match-winner 10 minutes later, with NSWIS athletes Matthew Dawson, Flynn Ogilvie, Tom Craig, Simon Orchard and Tristan White all playing in the match.

The bronze medal ends the Kookaburras’ streak of five consecutive Champions Trophy gold medals, but gave new coach Graham Reid a chance to introduce a younger team to international competition.
