The 2014 Commonwealth Games are officially underway following a fantastic opening ceremony at Celtic Park, with the Australian team being led by Australian cycling legend Anna Meares. The colourful ceremony opened the Games to more than 4000 athletes from 71 countries, each vying for that elusive gold medal.

A total of 79 NSWIS athletes from 14 sports have been selected on the Australian team, with 26 of those athletes competing on the opening day of competition. Triathletes Aaron Royle(
@ARoyle90) and Ryan Bailie (@OfficialBailie) will be the first NSWIS athletes aiming for the top of the podium as they compete in the men’s elite triathlon from midnight AEST.

Cyclist Peter Lewis and judo athlete Amy Meyer will also be competing for medals on day one of competition, with their medal events taking place early Friday morning AEST.

Thursday night’s viewing includes the Hockeyroos opening their campaign against Malaysia from 6pm AEST, with four NSWIS athletes on the team, while the first swimming heats take place from 7:30pm as David McKeon (
@DavoMcKeon), Emma McKeon(@emma_mckeon), Daniel Tranter (@DanielTranter), Jessica Ashwood(@JessicaAshwood) and Kenneth To (@kennethkhto) all kickstart their Games’ experience.
