NSWIS athlete James Magnussen has won his second individual world championship title after a stunning swim at the 2013 FINA Aquatic World Championships in Spain.

Magnussen successfully defended the men’s 100m freestyle world championship he won two years ago in China, posting a time of 47.71 to outlast Americans James Feigen and Olympic champion Nathan Adrian.

Magnussen turned fifth at the wall but put in a trademark final 50m to secure gold and regain his position at the top of the world.

There were more medals for NSWIS athletes overnight with Emma McKeon and Ami Matsuo both being awarded silver for their efforts in the Australian women’s 4x200m freestyle relay team. McKeon and Matsuo both swam in the heats of the event to help Australia secure a finals berth, before the team touched the wall second in the final.

Fellow NSWIS athlete Daniel Tranter also made his debut world championships one to remember, making the final of the men’s 200m individual medley before finishing sixth in a strong field.
