Nine NSWIS soccer players are among the athletes vying for a spot on the Australian Matildas team to contest the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany.

The squad of 24 will be cut to 21 with coach Tom Sermanni set to announce his team at a press conference in Sydney tomorrow.

The NSWIS athletes in contention for a spot in the squad are Ellyse Perry, Thea Slayter, Heather Garriock, Kyah Simon, Leena Khamis, Servet Uzunlar, Caitlin Foord, Catherine Canulli and Teigen Allen.

Australia has been drawn in a group with Brazil, Norway and Equatorial Guinea, and will take on Brazil in their first match on June 29.

The 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup takes place in Germany from June 26-July 17 2011.
