The Australian women’s soccer team, the Matildas, have suffered a first match loss at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, going down 0-1 to Brazil in a testing match.

Brazil’s winner came in the 54th minute after an Australian defensive lapse, however the Matildas were not without their chances. NSWIS athletes Kyah Simon and Heather Garriock had shots saved, as did their fellow Matildas’ teammates.

Australia’s next match comes against Equatorial Guinea on July 3 in Bochum, a must win game after Norway secured points in the other group D match.

Selected on the team are NSWIS athletes Ellyse Perry, Heather Garriock, Teigen Allen, Caitlin Foord, Servet Uzunlar, Kyah Simon and Leena Khamis.
