NSWIS swimmer Emma McKeon (
@emma_mckeon) was the standout performer on the first day of competition at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, bagging two gold medals and a world record in the pool.

Individually McKeon’s Games kicked off to the perfect start as she took gold in the women’s 200m freestyle, setting a new Games’ record in the heat before breaking that record again in the final en route to gold.

The 20 year old then backed up to swim in the final of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay, helping Australia set a new world record in the event as the team asserted its dominance over the rest of the Commonwealth.

Emma wasn’t the only McKeon to enjoy success in the pool on day one, as her brotherDavid McKeon (
@DavoMcKeon) took silver in the men’s 400m freestyle. David finished just over half a second behind Canadian Ryan Cochrane.

The McKeon’s success carries on a strong family tradition at the Commonwealth Games. The duo’s father Ron won two gold medals at the 1978 Commonwealth Games, and their mother Susie competed at the 1982 Commonwealth Games.

There was further medal success for judo athlete Amy Meyer on day one of competition. Competing in the women’s -48kg class, Meyer lost her first bout before regouping to win the repechage, progressing through to the bronze medal match where she was too strong for her Barbadian competitor.

The NSWIS medal tally stands at two gold, one silver and one bronze medal after day one of competition.
