Two Australian teams have won medals at their respective London Olympic test events, with the Australian women’s water polo team winning gold, and the Australian men’s hockey team taking silver.

The women’s water polo team, the Stingers, signalled their intentions ahead of the Olympics by defeating arch-rivals USA 6-5 to win gold.

Featuring NSWIS athletes Holly Lincoln-Smith, Nicola Zagame and Alicia McCormack, the Stingers played a strong game which saw Zagame score two goals and McCormack make a number of crucial saves to secure victory and a vital psychological advantage.

Meanwhile, the draws for the men’s and women’s Olympic water polo tournament were announced. The Australian men’s team will face Italy, Spain, Croatia, Greece and Kazakhstan in their group, while the women face Great Britain, Italy and Russia.

Elsewhere, the Australian men’s hockey team, featuring three NSWIS athletes, took home silver from their official test event after a 2-5 loss to Germany.

The Australians got out to an early lead before Germany pegged it back to lead 1-2 at the half, and 1-3 shortly into the second half. Another goal from the Kookaburras got them back to 2-3, however from there it was all Germany.
