It was a fantastic Friday for NSWIS athletes at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, with two gold, one silver and two bronze medals being won on day nine of competition.

Three medals medals came at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Glasgow, where diverMatthew Mitcham (
@matthew_mitcham) realised a career dream after winning gold in the men’s 10m synchronised platform event.

After six Commonwealth Games silver medals, including the men’s 3m synchronised springboard earlier on day nine, Mitcham broke through for gold alongside compatriot Domonic Bedgood in the men’s 10m synchronised platform. The duo was made to work for their win by competitors England, with Mitcham and Bedgood eventually taking gold with a score of 399.54 points, a mere .18 points ahead of second.

Fellow NSWIS diver Esther Qin broke through for her first Games medal on Commonwealth Games debut, winning bronze in the women’s 1m springboard. After qualifying for the final in first place, Qin posted a score of 278.65 to secure bronze.

It was also golden day for track & field athlete Dani Samuels, who triumphed in the women’s discus at Hampden Park. Samuels’ best throw of 64.88m was good enough to win the gold, bettering her previous Commonwealth best of bronze at the 2006 Games in Melbourne. Four of Samuels’ throws during the competition were long enough to have secured the top honour.

To round out the medals on day nine of competition in Glasgow, lawn bowls athlete Aron Sherriff (
@85omar) claimed bronze in the men’s singles event. Sherriff recorded a comfotable 21-8 victory over his opponent from New Zealand to win his first Commonwealth Games medal.

The NSWIS medal tally now stands at 14 gold, six silver and nine bronze medals following nine days of competition.

@shelleywatts87) will go for gold in the women’s light 60kg final; Mitcham and Qin return for the men’s 10m platform and women’s 3m springboard events respectively; and Casey Eastham(@CaseyEastham), Kate Jenner (@Katejenner22), Emily Smith (@Emilyjsmith26) and Kellie White (@KellWhite16) line up for the Hockeyroos as they face England in the women’s hockey gold medal match.
