Canoe slalom athlete Kate Lawrence was the big winner over the weekend, winning two gold medals at the 2011 Merano International in Italy.

Day one saw silver medals go to Lawrence and fellow NSWIS athlete Alison Borrows in the women’s K1 and C1, respectively. Following on from the medal success, Ethan Hodson finished sixth in the men’s C1.

Day two action had Lawrence ahead of the rest of the field to secure gold in the women’s C1 and K1 events, defeating her opponents in the K1 with a score of 102.92. The C1 triumph came after Lawrence held on by less than a second to make it double gold. Hodson complemented her silver medal from the previous day with a bronze in the women’s C1 on day two.

Hodson made the most of the conditions on day two to win silver in the men’s C1, while Joey Croft improved from a 35th place on day one in the men’s K1 to finish 19th on day two.
