The 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships concluded over the weekend with a host of NSWIS athletes being crowned world champions in Glasgow.

Paralympic gold medallist Maddison Elliott led the way for the NSWIS contingent, bagging four gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

Elliott set a new world record in the women’s 100m freestyle S8 en route to gold, while also taking top individual honours in the women’s 100m backstroke S8 and 50m freestyle S8. There was added success in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay 34 points with the Australian quartet winning gold before securing silver in the 4x100m medley relay 34 points. Elliott’s bronze came in the women’s 100m butterfly S8.

Ellie Cole was another standout performer, taking home three gold, one silver and one bronze medal. Winning relay gold and silver alongside fellow NSWIS athlete Maddison Elliott, Cole added gold in the women’s 100m freestyle S9 and set a new world record in the 100m backstroke S9 on the way to being crowned world champion.

Youngster Tiffany Thomas-Kane proved she is one to watch in the future with a four medal haul, including gold and a new world record in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB6. The 13 year old also won silver in the 50m butterfly S6 and bronze in both the 50m and 100m freestyle S6 events.

The men’s events were highlighted by Matthew Levy winning four medals; silver in the men’s 100m freestyle S7 and 200m individual medley SM7, and bronze in the men’s 50m freestyle S7 and 4x100m freestyle relay 34 points.

Fellow NSWIS athletes Sean Russo and Tim Antalfy were also on the medal dais, winning bronze in the men’s 100m backstroke S13 and 100m butterfly S13 respectively.

The Australian team finished seventh on the medal tally with seven gold, eight silver and 13 bronze for a total of 30 medals.
