Diver Matthew Mitcham (
@matthew_mitcham) was the solitary NSWIS medal winner on day seven of the 2014 Commonwealth Games as he picked up his fifth career Commonwealth medal.

Opening his Glasgow campaign in the men’s 1m springboard, one of four events on his schedule, Mitcham easily qualified for the final with a score of 383.5 points, before adding an extra 21 points in the final to secure silver. Mitcham’s silver medal score of 404.85 was just 1.45 points ahead of compatriot Grant Nel in third, with England’s Jack Laugher winning gold.

Joining Mitcham in the diving events were fellow NSWIS athletes Melissa Wu(
@MelissaPaigeWu) and Esther Qin. Wu finished fifth in the women’s 10m platform synchro, and Qin finished fourth in the women’s 3m springboard synchro.

The NSWIS medal tally now stands at 11 gold, three silver and seven bronze medals following seven days of competition.

Despite only one medal being won in Glasgow on day seven, there were several strong performances from NSWIS athletes at the Games.

In particular the track & field events saw five NSWIS athletes earn top-10 finishes, withFabrice Lapierre (
@FabriceLapierre), Madeline Heiner (@madheiner) and Sophie Stanwell each placing fourth in the men’s long jump, women’s 3000m steeplechase and women’s heptathlon respectively.

Fellow NSWIS athletes Brandon Starc (
@Brandonstarc93) and Victoria Mitchell(@vic_mitchell) finished eighth and ninth in the men’s high jump and women’s 3000m steeplechase respectively.

A host of NSWIS athletes will be competing for medals on day eight of Commonwealth competition, including Wu in the women’s 10m platform; Kurt Fearnley (
@kurtfearnley) in the men’s T54 1500m; Angela Ballard (@angie_ballard) and Christie Dawes(@YahooDawes) in the women’s T54 1500m, and cyclists Caleb Ewan (@CalebEwan) andMark Renshaw (@Mark_Renshaw) in the men’s time trial.
