NSWIS athletes have dominated the Australian Junior Athletics Championships with a host of competitors posting IAAF World Junior Championship and Commonwealth Games qualifiers.

The meet’s first event, the ambulant under-20 long jump saw three Commonwealth Games qualifiers, two to NSWIS athletes. Leg amputee Sarah Walsh won the event with a leap of 4.39m, whilst Mingara’s Rae Anderson finished in fifth with a 3.59m.

“My wining leap was just 1cm short of what I jumped at the NSW Open Championships, so I was really happy with it,” said Walsh a year 10 student at St John Bosco College at Engadine.

“My jumps have been really consistent lately. Just last Sunday we changed my run up so I’m over the moon it went well today.”

After slicing nearly a second from her 800 metres personal best when running second to Kenya’s Eunice Sum at the Sydney Track Classic on Saturday, Wamberal’s Georgia Wassall produced a stunning final lap to record an impressive meet record of 2:04.45 to claim the Australia Junior Title on Sunday.

In other action, IAAF World Youth Champion Mackenzie Little, who has opted out of selection for the Australian Spark team to focus on her Year 12 studies, won the girl’s under 20 javelin with a throw of 52.18m in the second round.

Athletics Australia Selectors will meet in the coming days to determine the Australian Spark team bound for the IAAF World Junior Championships.
