Katie Slattery is set to become the new Track Endurance Coach for the NSWIS Cycling Program, adding to a team of experienced coaches leading the program as they build towards Tokyo 2020.

NSWIS are delighted to announce Slattery’s appointment, who accepts the ‘NSWIS Cycling Coach – Track Endurance’ role following more than 10 years of involvement with the NSWIS Cycling Program in her capacity as a physiologist.

A specialised knowledge and understanding of the sport combined with Slattery’s expertise in science, analytics, technology and innovation means cycling athletes at NSWIS will continue to have strong support.

Katie Slattery joins current cycling Track session coaches Mick Marshall and Jenny Triggs, who will continue to support NSWIS Track athlete progression and performance. NSWIS is extremely grateful for the outstanding contribution that Mick and Jenny have made over the past 12 months.

Slattery will also have one of the best mentors in Australian cycling in NSWIS Cycling Performance Manager Brad McGee, guiding her transition into the coaching position.

Splitting her time evenly between coaching NSWIS cycling athletes and a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at UTS, Slattery will focus on research in track endurance cycling which will ultimately impact the performance of athletes and Slattery’s own coaching capabilities.

Director of High Performance for the NSW Institute of Sport, Clare Prideaux, sees Slattery’s appointment as proof of one of the Institute’s key objectives; to identify and develop quality coaches.

“Having the right people in coaching positions and then managing and progressing these talented individuals ensures that we will continue to have sustained world-class performances” said Prideaux.

“We’ve seen how successful transitioning between performance roles can be with former biomechanist Jake Michael, who last year became the Head Coach for the NSWIS Sprint Kayak Program”

“Katie Slattery has such a wealth of experience gained through her time as a physiologist at the NSW Institute of Sport  over many years and in an integrated project role with Cycling Australia in 2015 and 2016, we are thrilled to see her move into a coaching position”.

For Slattery, it’s a chance to apply her knowledge and experience in a sport she is passionate about.

“It’s such an exciting opportunity and I can’t wait to get stuck in” said Slattery.

“During my time as Senior Physiologist at NSWIS I worked directly with the National Track Endurance Women’s Program throughout the Rio Olympic and Paralympic four year cycle, so it’s great to continue working in the sport as we now look towards Tokyo”.

Katie Slattery will commence the new role, which is supported by NSWIS sport partners Cycling Australia and Cycling NSW, in July.

NSWIS will continue the search for a full time Track Sprint Coach to join Katie, Brad and NSWIS Cycling session coaches.
