NSWIS cyclists have enjoyed a successful start to the 2017 MARS Cycling Australia Road National Championships in Ballarat, claiming gold and silver in the women’s under 23 criterium and bronze in the men’s under 23 criterium.

18-year-old Nicola MacDonald powered to take the women’s under 23 title ahead of teammate Josie Talbot who won silver. MacDonald only made the step up from under 19 competition in the winter and was naturally delighted with the result.

She said, “I just wanted to come here and race as hard as I could. It was a bit daunting racing them [elite riders] as I have always looked up to them, but really exciting being able to race them and be competitive.”

There was a thrilling sprint finish in the men’s event, with NSWIS’s Ayden Toovey battling to claim a place on the podium in third.

The competition continues over the coming days with the Time Trials and Road Races, with more NSWIS athletes hopeful of success.
