Dual Olympic Games hockey gold medallist and current coach of the NSW Arrows and the NSW Institute of Sport, Katrina Powell, is set to be inducted into Hockey Australia’s Hall of Fame.

Powell, who scored 141 goals for Australia, along with the gold medals at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996 and again at the Sydney Games in 2000, has devoted her life to the game.

Overall Powell competed in three Olympic Games and won gold medals at Olympic, World Cup, Champions Trophy and Commonwealth Games tournaments in a decorated 253 game international career.

A humble Powell told Fairfax Media’s James Hall that she was stunned but honoured by the nomination.

“I’m a bit surprised,” Powell told Fairfax.

“I assume they’re working their way down a list of good hockey players that played for Australia because there are a group of athletes that I played with that are still yet to be inducted.

“A little surprised but very honoured.”

Powell believes her success and love of the game stemmed from a strong relationship with teammates and coaches – a philosophy she is determined to pass on to the next generation of players in her coaching roles for the Arrows and the NSWIS.

The Hall of Fame event will be held in November.
