The NSW Institute of Sport will be hosting a free Sports Science & Sports Medicine Symposium on the evening of Tuesday 13th February.

The agenda will focus on high intensity training and relative energy deficiency (RED-S) and their effects on training adaptation and performance.

Featuring presentations from Amy Woods (NSWIS Physiologist) and Kate Ackerman (US Sports Physician, Endocrinologist and US Rowing Team Doctor), the Symposium is sure to be an intriguing evening for sports medical practitioners, dietitians, physiotherapists, physiologists, coaches and strength & conditioning providers alike.

6:00PM – Amy Woods
The effects of intensified training on resting metabolic rate (RMR), body composition and performance in trained cyclists.
Amy Woods joined the NSWIS Physiology team in 2017. Amy currently works closely with the NSWIS Rowing and Cycling programs, and provides project based physiology support to a number of our other sports. Amy completed her PhD as a joint project between the AIS, Rowing Australia and the University of Canberra. Her research has been focused on how periods of heavy training can affect athletes’ resting metabolic rate and energy availability, and how this might then influence health, wellbeing and performance.

6:30PM – Kate Ackerman
Relative energy deficiency (RED-S) what are the effects on training adaptation and performance?
Kathryn Ackerman, M.D., is board certified in Internal Medicine; Sports Medicine; and Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. She is the Medical Director of the Female Athlete Program at Boston Children’s Hospital, the Associate Director of the Sports Endocrine Research Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital, and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr Ackerman is a former US team lightweight rower, is a team physician for US Rowing, and is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. Her research focuses on the Female Athlete Triad and the various aspects of Relative Energy in Deficiency in Sports. Specifically, she has focused on hormonal treatments for bone density improvements and fracture healing as well as various imaging modalities for assessing bone quality.
