The 92nd Australian Athletics Championships start today with more than 800 athletes and their coaches descending on the Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne.

The event doubles as the Commonwealth Games Selection Trial for Glasgow 2014, with Athletics Australia to nominate its initial squad for selection at the conclusion of all events.

Dani Samuels will compete in both the women’s shot put and discus, with multiple qualifiers in both events ensuring that she will be instantly added to the nominee list for Glasgow 2014 if she wins the national crown.

Up and comer Jarrod Geddes will look to take victory in the men’s 200m to ensure his automatic nomination for Glasgow. Boasting a Commonwealth Games B-Qualifier for the event, it will be his first open age selection to an individual event if successful.

IAAF World Junior Championship representatives Nicholas Hough and Michelle Jenneke will be out for glory in men’s 110m hurdles and women’s 100m hurdles. Jenneke will face stiff competition from Olympic champion Sally Pearson (Qld) and defending champion Shannon McCann (WA).

Hawkesbury athlete Ian Dewhurst will renew his rivalry with Tristan Thomas (Tas) in the men’s 400m hurdles, whilst Brandon Starc (high jump), Fabrice Lapierre (long jump) and Rae Anderson (Para long jump) will be hoping for qualifying distances in their respective jumping events.
