NSWIS runners Eloise Wellings and Madeline Hills will be part of Australian athletics history this morning when they run in the final of the 5000m.

Australia has never before had a qualifier for the event’s Olympic final.

Incredibly, Wellings and Hills will be joined by Genevieve LaCaze as the Australians form a three-pronged attack on the medals.

Wellings was the fastest Australian in qualifying and goes into the final ranked sixth.

She ran 15:19.02 in qualifying, just days after becoming the first ever Australian to record a top 10 finish in the final of the 10,000m.

Hills qualified in 15:21.33 in what has been a highly successful meet full of breakthrough achievements.

Hills and LaCaze became the first two Australians to ever qualify for the women’s Olympic steeplechase final.

“It’s just so exciting, especially for distance running in Australia,” Wellings said after securing her place in the final.

“It’s a reward for all three of us that the hard work is paying off.”

Australia will be looking to progress through the heats of the women’s 4 x 400m relay.

NSWIS track star Anneliese Rubie will feature for the Australian team.

Rubie ran in the semi-finals of the individual event earlier in the week.
