NSWIS athletes have been doing the business at the Canoe Sprint National Championships over the past few days.

The standout performance has come from two time Olympian and NSWIS athlete Murray Stewart. He took his third consecutive K1 1000m title on Monday, before following this up with gold in the K1 500m on Tuesday.

Stewart is currently considering whether to keep racing up until the 2020 Olympics, but more strong performances like this might just help persuade him.

Stewart said, “At the moment I’m not committed beyond each training session. I retire about twice a week! I wouldn’t rule Tokyo out, but I’m definitely not going to commit now.”

Other NSWIS canoe sprinters have also enjoyed success on the Penrith water this week. Riley Fitzsimmons won his first national title along with crewmate Jordan Wood in the K2 1000m.

Jo Brigden-Jones secured further NSWIS success in an entertaining race for the K1 200m title – strengthening her hopes of representing Australia in the event in the coming years.
