NSWIS Welcomes Melissa King to Board

The NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Melissa King to its Board, as well as the reappointments of Michael Bushell, Amy Jones, and Brad Lancken.

The four will contribute to the nine-strong NSWIS Board which has the crucial role of continuing to position the Institute’s athletes and staff members for success at the 2024 Summer and Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games and in ensuring a strategic build-up to the 2028 Games – and beyond.

The appointment of King, and reappointments of Bushell, Jones and Lancken, ensures the strength of the NSWIS Board will continue to be underpinned by a diversity of skillsets and expertise which provide the Institute with business acumen, sport governance, strategy, commercial expertise, and first-hand elite athlete experience.

Among Ms King’s most recent achievements was her role as the CEO of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 Organising Committee. Under her guidance the Committee delivered the most successful women’s world cup in history – a carbon neutral event which was delivered in partnership with NSW Government.

The process for King’s appointment commenced in August of this year when the Institute put a call out for Expressions of Interest on NSWIS’s website. The applicants were shortlisted, and candidates were interviewed by a selection committee which identified King as the most suitable candidate.

Along with Bushell, Jones, and Lancken, she was appointed for the term 1 December 2023 through to 1 December 2026, and they join Chair Gary Flowers, Deputy Chair Elizabeth Crouch AM, Celia Murphy, Matt Shirvington and Sarah Ryan OAM on the board.

NSWIS wishes to acknowledge and thank Chris Fydler OAM who has stepped down from the Board. Mr Fydler brought tremendous expertise and enthusiasm to the NSWIS Board, and helped the Institute enjoy a number of tremendous results during his terms.

NSWIS Chair Mr Gary Flowers said:

“It’s a pleasure to welcome Melissa to the NSWIS Board.

“She brings outstanding credentials to the table, including her role as a former Chief Executive Officer of Surf Life Saving Australia, the Sydney Opera House’s Group Manager Corporate Partnership, and her work for the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

“We look forward to Melissa’s efforts and contributions to ensure NSWIS fulfills its aims to ensure our scholarship holders have every opportunity to be ‘world’s best’ through the many services the Institute offers.”

Melissa King said:

“I am honoured for the opportunity to contribute my knowledge, skills, and passion to an organisation that plays a pivotal role in the journey of elite athletes.

“NSWIS’s commitment to excellence aligns with my values, and I am eager to work collaboratively in support of the organisation’s vision, mission and priorities.

“Together with my fellow Board members, I look forward to fostering a culture of success, growth, and empowerment for the organisation.”
