The NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) Chairman, Phil Coles AM, will receive the Service to the Sport award at Triathlon Australia’s annual Celebration of Champions Awards Dinner in Melbourne on Thursday night.

Coles is being recognised for his significant contribution to the development of triathlon in Australia, in particular his key role in triathlon’s inclusion into the Summer Olympic Games program in Sydney 2000.

NSWIS CEO Charles Turner congratulated Coles on the achievement and said his influence on the sport had extended beyond Australia.

“On behalf of the team at the NSWIS I’d like to congratulate Phil on this fantastic achievement,” Turner said.

“Phil has been a long standing servant to the sport of triathlon in Australia and this award is very deserving.

“His work to include triathlon at the Sydney 2000 Olympics has left a lasting legacy, not only in Australia but world wide.”

Coles, who has been Patron of Triathlon Australia since 1993, will receive the award alongside master triathlon coach Col Stewart.

Coles served as the Secretary General of the International Triathlon Union between 1994 and 1999 and was made an Honorary Life Member of the International Triathlon Union in 2000.
