Swimmer Jarrod Poort kicked off the 2013 FINA Aquatic World Championships in style over the weekend with a solid showing in the men’s 5km open water swim.

The NSWIS swimmer, who competed in the men’s 1500m freestyle at the 2012 London Paralympic Games, finished fifth and stopped the clock at 53:34.3, just four seconds behind the gold medallist from Tunisia.

Also at the championships, the Australian women’s water polo team began their campaign with an easy 15-4 victory over New Zealand.

NSWIS athlete Holly Lincoln-Smith was a standout for the team, scoring three goals, while fellow NSWIS athletes Nicola Zagame, Keesja Gofers, Hannah Buckling and Jayde Appel each scored a goal.
