NSWIS sailor Jonathan Harris and compatriots Colin Harrison and Russell Boaden have won silver at the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Hyeres, France.

Heading into the final day of racing in third position in the men’s sonar event, the Australian trio signalled their intentions for gold by winning the first of two races to set up a winner takes all showdown in the event’s final race.

Despite leading at the first mark the Australians couldn’t hold their form and eventually finished fourth in the second and final race of the day, taking silver overall to better their bronze medal from the same event in 2014.

“Today we got a win in the first race, and a fourth in the second race. The fourth in the second race was so close, everyone going over the line could have touched each other. The fourth place put us into silver medal position, which is great news for us because the last few regattas we’ve only ever got bronzes. So we’ve got rid of the bronze curse,” Harris said to the Australian Paralympic Committee.

“The regatta overall has been fantastic, the racing has been very close and competitive. We’re really looking forward to going to the next regatta and consolidating what we’ve done today.”

The Australian team will now head to the Netherlands for the Delta Lloyd Regatta from 26-30 May.
