Several NSWIS athletes have recorded strong results at the 2012 Australian Athletics Championships in Melbourne over the weekend.

The weekend’s results were highlighted by NSWIS athlete Dani Samuels taking gold in the women’s discus. Samuels, who has already been nominated for the Australian Olympic team, recorded an excellent throw of 62.34m, her longest in two years, to win gold and record her seventh consecutive Australian title in the event. She then went on to win the women’s shot put with a heave of 16.65m.

Fellow NSWIS athlete Steven Solomon won his second consecutive men’s 400m title after a stellar display. Solomon clocked a new personal best of 45.54 seconds to take the title ahead of Alex Beck and Ben Offereins.

Paralympic hopeful Stephanie Schweitzer was also in the medals over the weekend, picking up gold in the women’s ambulant long jump and silver in the women’s 200m. Angela Ballard, another London Paralympic hopeful, won gold in the women’s 400m and 800m wheelchair, as well as silver in the women’s 100m and 200m wheelchair events.

Other results from the event included James Kaan and Jeremy Roff finishing with silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 800m, Bridey Delaney taking silver in the women’s 1500m and James Nipperess securing silver in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.
