The Australian men’s water polo team has finished fifth at the FINA World League Super Final after a historic victory over Hungary.

The Sharks had not defeated Hungary for 19 years, but after a stellar defensive display the team secured a 9-6 victory to place fifth.

The Australians earlier missed out on the opportunity to play for medals after losing 8-9 to surprise packet Brazil, and were locked at 3-3 with the Hungarians at the main break.

An outstanding third quarter from the Sharks set up the victory, with NSWIS athlete Richie Campbell scoring three goals and fellow NSWIS athlete Joel Dennerley performing strongly as goalkeeper to keep the Hungarians at bay and secure the win.

NSWIS athlete Nathan Power also scored two goals in the win, with Johnno Cotterill and Aidan Roach each adding a single goal. Fellow NSWIS athletes Jarrod Gilchrist and Tyler Martin were also part of the team.
