The Aussie Sharks won Gold in the 2017 FINA World League Tournament in Gold Coast on Sunday, with the majority of the team coming from NSWIS.

Following previous impressive performances in the competition, the team fought hard in a difficult final against the USA – eventually running out 8-6 winners.

Captain and NSWIS athlete Joe Kayes was delighted with the result and performance.

“Tough was an understatement!  It was all our war out there today and I was getting smashed – I don’t think I kept my head up for very long,” said Kayes.

“The boys played really well. It was an absolute pleasure to captain these boys, the young ones, five on debut, it was good to see every game they picked up a lot and we saw that in today’s final,” he said.

The win qualifies the Sharks for the FINA World League Super Final in Russia in June, and lays down an impressive marker on the road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
