The Australian women’s water polo team has fallen just short of FINA World League gold in China, taking silver after a hard fought match against the USA.

The Stingers, featuring five NSWIS athletes, found themselves on the back foot early as the Americans went up 6-2 in the opening quarter.

From there the Australians fought valiantly, winning the second quarter 3-1 to go into halftime down 5-7. Neither team was able to score in the third quarter before the Stingers won the final quarter 2-1, however after the first quarter they were unable to bridge the gap, eventually taking silver with a 7-8 loss.

NSWIS athlete Nicola Zagame scored two goals and was joined in the team by fellow NSWIS athletes Holly Lincoln-Smith, Lea Yanitsas, Keesja Gofers and Bronte Halligan.

The Stingers now return home for two weeks before travelling to Europe ahead of the FINA World Championships from 24 July – 9 August.
