NSWIS athletes Brandon Starc and Dani Samuels both turned in fantastic performances on home soil at the Sydney Track Classic over the weekend.

Starc’s gold medal in the men’s high jump was highlighted by a new personal best for the 21 year old, as the Commonwealth Games representative notched an impressive jump of 2.30m en route to victory.

In winning gold Starc defeated Canadian Michael Mason and reigning Olympic bronze medallist Derek Drouin to move to fifth on the Australian all-time list.

Discus thrower Samuels continued her strong domestic form with another gold medal in the women’s discus.

Samuels’ best throw of 66.21m marked her second-longest throw on Australian soil, and positioned her as a firm favourite to win another national championship and secure world championship representation in two weeks’ time.

In other results, NSWIS distance runner Madeline Heiner won the Australian women’s 5000m title after finishing behind Magdalene Masai, while Nicholas Hough ran the second fastest time of his career (13.55) to win the men’s 110m hurdles.
