The 2012 NSW State Championships wrapped up over the weekend, giving a number of NSWIS swimmers the perfect warm up to the upcoming Olympic selection trials.

Day one
Day one of action was highlighted by NSWIS athlete and reigning world champion James Magnussen taking gold in the men’s 100m freestyle. Magnussen clocked 49.02 to triumph in the blue riband event, with Matthew and Andrew Abood finishing fifth and sixth.

Also on day one of action, young gun David McKeon continued to impress by winning silver in the men’s 400m freestyle, Daniel Arnamnart won gold in the men’s 50m backstroke and Jessica Ashwood took bronze in the women’s 800m.

Day two
The story of day two was NSWIS swimmer Daniel Tranter taking gold in the men’s 200m individual medley. Tranter won in 1:59.23, breaking the NSW record set by Ian Thorpe in 2003, with fellow NSWIS athlete Jayden Hadler taking bronze in the same event.

The other highlights on day two were Sean Russo and Jacqui Freney picking up silver in the men’s and women’s 100m backstroke multi-class events, respectively.

Day three
The final day of the championships was punctuated by Matthew Abood taking gold in the men’s 50m freestyle ahead of Magnussen. Abood won the one lap dash in 22.34 ahead of Magnussen’s 22.65 to cement his position as reigning national champion.

The NSWIS one-two was then complemented by Freney taking gold in the women’s 100m freestyle multi-class, Hadler’s silver in the men’s 100m butterfly and Tranter’s bronze in the men’s 400m individual medley to round out the strong NSWIS results.
