NSWIS paddler Murray Stewart won two medals over the weekend at the Szeged, Hungary leg of the 2014 ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup.

Stewart’s first medal of the meet came in the men’s K1 1000m, where he took silver behind his German competitor Max Hoff. Compatriot Ken Wallace joined Stewart on the podium after winning bronze, marking the first time at a world cup event that two Australians have featured on the men’s K1 1000m medal dais.

Stewart then backed up his gruelling individual event by helping guide the Australian men’s K4 1000m crew to gold, less than an hour after winning silver.

Joined by fellow NSWIS athlete David Smith, as well as fellow Olympic gold medallist Tate Smith and Jacob Clear, the Aussie foursome powered to the top of the podium after defeating Hungary and Serbia, with less than half a second separating all three crews.

Also competing at the event were NSWIS athletes Lachlan Tame and Jo Brigden-Jones, who finished fifth in the men’s K1 500m and ninth in the women’s K1 200m respectively.
