NSWIS golfer Matthew Stieger has continued his outstanding form by claiming victory in Australia’s most prestigious amateur tournament, the 2011 Australian Amateur Championship at Victoria Golf Club.

The 36 hole grind was a challenge from start to finish for Stieger as he came up against Kiwi Ben Campbell, who was aiming to become only the third New Zealander to win the Australian title.

The golfers were all square through 34 holes before Stieger made a decisive birdie on the 35th hole. The NSWIS athlete then held his nerve to claim the most important victory of his career thus far, and have his name carved on the trophy beside golfers such as Brendan Jones, Mathew Goggin and Jim Ferrier.
