A new look Aussie Stingers Water Polo team have taken gold in their first major event since the Rio 2016 Olympics – winning the FINA World League Intercontinental Tournament on Sunday night.

The Stingers overcame hosts and per-tournament favourites the USA 10-7 in a closely fought final. The scores were level at 7-7 with three minutes remaining, but Australia hit three unanswered goals to take an impressive victory.

The final win followed victories over China, Japan, Canada and Kazakhstan earlier in the competition, and also secures qualification for the FINA World League Super Final in China next month.

The Stingers team featured four NSWIS athletes in Keesja Gofer, Hannah Buckling, Isobel Bishop and Amy Ridge. It completes a successful few days for Australian Water Polo with the Aussie Sharks claiming a World League title in Gold Coast last week.
